Medicaid Department
In light of the rising costs of health care, the mandate to fight
Medicaid fraud is urgent at both the federal and state levels of
government. Medicaid Fraud Control Units (MFCU’s) tackle
fraud at the state level. The mission of the MFCU’s is to
investigate and prosecute Medicaid provider fraud and incidences
of patient abuse and neglect.
There are 48 Medicaid Fraud Control Units in the nation, and their
efforts have proven to be highly effective in the fight against
provider fraud and abuse in the Medicaid program. The Arkansas
MFCU is located in the Office of the Attorney General and consists
of attorneys, investigators, nurses, an auditor and support staff.
According to the federal Annual Report of State Medicaid Fraud
Control Units for Fiscal year 2002, collectively, the units recovered
over $288 million in court-ordered restitutions, fines, penalties,
and civil settlements. The total number of convictions, achieved
for that period was 1,147 of these totals, the Arkansas MFCU recovered
$912,418 in Medicaid funds and its investigations led to 19 convictions.
